Don’t smoke

Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and lung diseases. The best way to prevent lung disease is to not smoke. If you do smoke, it’s not too late—quitting will prevent further damage.

Minimize exposure to pollutants

Both indoor and outdoor pollutants in the air can harm your lungs. These pollutants include secondhand smoke, home chemicals, aerosols, and more. Minimize your exposure to pollutants by making your home smoke-free and ensuring proper ventilation when using chemicals or aerosols.

Prevent infection

Did you know that infections like the flu, pneumonia, or even a cold can damage your lungs? To stay healthy, wash your hands often with soap and water, get vaccinated against the flu each year, and practice good oral hygiene to prevent infections caused by germs in your mouth.

Improve your respiratory health

Regular exercise helps strengthen your lungs and improve your respiratory health. Incorporate regular physical activity into your lifestyle. If this seems daunting or time-consuming, start small: take a walk each morning or after work, make an effort to stand more, and take the stairs instead of the elevator. Staying motivated to exercise often comes with finding an activity that you enjoy, so try new things—and it doesn’t have to be expensive; there are plenty of free videos on YouTube for things like yoga, dancing, high-intensity interval training, and more.
